Small-business hosting in South Africa: questions before you buy

Compare the website, email, backup, security, support, renewal, and migration details behind a hosting plan before choosing on price alone.

Independent guidance: Compare current provider terms, ownership, support, and exit requirements before buying. Clearly labelled affiliate links may earn us a commission.

Match the plan to the website

Start with the number of websites, expected traffic, storage, databases, email accounts, domains, and software the business actually runs. A brochure plan can look generous while missing staging, cron jobs, a specific PHP version, e-commerce support, or a required integration.

Separate a brochure site, WordPress site, store, and custom application. They have different backup, performance, update, and support needs.

Keep ownership independent

Register the domain and hosting account in the business name. Keep the registrar, DNS, hosting administrator, recovery email, billing records, SSL, analytics, and website administrator under business control.

A designer or hosting provider may manage the setup, but should not be the only person who can renew the domain, recover the account, or move the website.

Check the provider offer

HOSTAFRICA publishes South African hosting options with features such as SSL, backups, email, storage, domains, and website-building tools.

Use the current product page as a starting point, then confirm plan limits, renewal pricing, support, backups, migration, cancellation, and whether the exact service fits the website.

Ask about renewal and recovery

Confirm renewal price, billing cycle, domain renewal treatment, migration support, cancellation, backup retention, restore charges, security response, and the time it takes to recover a site or mailbox. Promotional pricing is not the cost of ownership.

Keep an independent copy of the website, database, domain records, email exports, administrator credentials, DNS information, and current recovery contacts.

Compare security and performance

Ask how updates, SSL, malware response, access control, rate limits, monitoring, caching, storage, and uptime are handled. Clarify which security or performance features are included and which require an extra product or technical plan.

A larger storage number does not automatically create a faster or safer site. Compare the controls that affect the actual application and the support response when they fail.

Plan a migration before changing hosts

Confirm who controls the domain, DNS, SSL, hosting account, email, analytics, and website administrator. Plan DNS timing, mailbox migration, forwarding, redirects, forms, backups, analytics, payments, and a rollback path.

Test the migrated site from a clean browser and mobile device. Check forms, email delivery, redirects, logins, payments, caching, analytics, and recovery before closing the old environment.

Price the whole operating model

Compare hosting, domain, mailbox, backup, migration, support, security, staging, storage, traffic, additional sites, VAT, renewal, and cancellation. Include the internal time required to administer the account.

The lowest monthly price is not a saving if the business cannot recover its website, loses mail during a change, or must pay separately for the controls its site needs.

Choose from current provider terms

Small Business IT SA can help organise the hosting decision, but a provider link does not guarantee availability, performance, support, or recovery.

The final choice should come from the current provider terms and the business’s ownership and migration requirements.
